Teaching
Within the English Department and the Core Program at Oglethorpe University, Joanmarie teaches multiethnic U.S. literature, global literature, and writing, which is another way to say she tries to teach students how to figure out what they think—about what and in relation to whom and also how—on paper. In each of her classes, her goal is for students to have a grounded, salient, and relatable understanding of the content through nontraditional, multimodal activities that democratize the classroom, demythologize literary studies, and contextualize literature with cultural studies in order for students to feel seen and heard. Examining histories of colonial and imperial violence, for both English and non-English majors requires introducing keywords (often, jargon) through accessible, adaptable means. Sometimes, this means playing to her advantage as a younger faculty member who, too, must contend with the ubiquity of social media. She leans into this. For now, at least, it’s effective.
